Architectural Controls on a 2.6 to 2.7 Ga World Class Gold-Nickel camp, Kambalda, W.A.
This field trip will look at the architectural controls on the world class gold and nickel deposits at Kambalda that have produced over 9 million ounces of gold and 65 million tonnes of nickel to date. The trip will focus on the early architecture controlling these deposits, and the mineral systems approach to exploration that has had recent success at Kambalda. There will be a series of visits to gold and nickel deposits combined with assessment of drill core and field trips to type geological sections. These field visits will be supplemented with short seminars on key aspects of the geology. New hyperspectral techniques currently being developed will also be covered.
North Queensland Gold Deposits
The Drummond basin and Charters Towers region has an exceptional endowment of gold with over 12 million oz of resources and contains a variety of gold styles that formed over a period of 100 million years. The Pajingo gold mine set a Queensland record for gold production in 2003 of 340,500 oz and Charters Towers produced in excess of six million oz of gold during the main historic mining period between 1872 and 1918. Recent exploration has highlighted significant discoveries at Mount Carlton and Mt Coolon. The field excursion is planned to include Ravenswood, Mt Wright and Charters Towers gold deposits in the Charters Towers district, and Pajingo, Mt Coolon and Mt Carlton gold deposits in the Drummond basin. There will be opportunity to visit historic sites in Charters Towers, a major gold rush town during the late 1800’s.
West Coast South Island New Zealand: gold and coal
The West Coast of the South Island is one of New Zealand’s prime travel destinations, because of its wild and beautiful scenery, and its gold and coal mining heritage. Gold is currently produced from the Globe Progress open pit mine at Reefton and several alluvial gold mining operations. Coal is produced from several underground and open-pit mines, mainly for export. This field trip is being run by the 7th International Mining Geology Conference (www.ausimm.com.au/simgc2009/home.asp), and is open to SGA Conference delegates and partners.
Active and Extinct Epithermal Environments of the Nth Island New Zealand.
The North Island is renowned for its volcanic landscape, hot springs and gold-silver deposits. This 7-day excursion through the Taupo Volcanic Zone and southern Coromandel peninsula provides an overview of epithermal deposits and the processes that lead to their formation, with emphasis on metal transport-deposition, hydrothermal alteration, fluid chemistry, hydrology, and volcanic-tectonic setting.
High Grade BIF Deposits: a Yilgarn-Hamersley comparison
The objective of this field trip/workshop is to compare and contrast Rio Tinto\'d5s Proterozoic BIF-hosted Tom Price and Paraburdoo deposits with the BHPB\'d5s Mt Whaleback deposit and then compare those deposits with the largest Archean BIF deposit at Koolyanobbing (Southern Cross Province) and the to be mined Weld Range deposits in the Murchison Province in Western Australia. This field trip will be conducted on parts as a workshop with evening talks by various presenters and discussions amongst participants.
Uranium Mineral Systems in South Australia, including Olympic Dam
The theme of the tour is Uranium Mineral Systems in South Australia, including breccia-related and sandstone hosted examples. It demonstrates the link between 1580 Ma Cu-Au-U mineralisation and younger styles of U mineralisation.
Nonsulfide Zinc Deposit of Angouran and the Fossil to Active Geothermal Fields of NW Iran
The unusually high grade (up to 40%Zn) Angouran-type deposit is the first defined occurrence of this type that consists of a mixed hydrothermal sulfide-carbonate zinc ore with a supergene Zn-carbonate overprint. The depost is situated within the Cenozoic Urumieh-Dokhtar volcanic belt of northwestern Iran. It hosts large fossil and active geothermal fields with numerous hot springs, traverine deposits and sulfataras, as well as the genetically ralated epithermal, precious and polymetallic ore deposits including Angouran. The 3 day field excursion includes a visit to the Angouran mine and to the supergene Zn occurrence at Chichaklou, as well as to a couple of the numerous active and fossil geothermal features including the pre-historic site of Solomon's prison at a travertine mound.
The Apatite-Magnetite Deposits (IOCG's) of the Bafq district, Central Iran
Major (2 Gt) sulfide-poor, Fe oxide-apatite-REE deposits and transitional apatite-REE rich rocks (IOCG) occur in the structurally controlled metallogenic province of Bafq in Central Iran. The mineralization is associated with large scale bimodal volcanism of Lower Cambrian age where a distal alkali metasomatism, and a proximal alteration commonly consisting of Fe oxide-apatite-REE-pyroxene/actinolite/chlorite-garnet-calcite-quartz have developed. During a 3 day field trip we will look at selected active mines and deposits. This field trip is planned to be conducted in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Iran

Breccias, Fluids & Copper Mineralization in the Mount Isa & Cloncurry Region, NW Queensland
The Proterozoic Mount Isa district is home to world-class base metal and IOCG deposits. A central theme to the copper mineralization in the district is the strong association between brecciation, veining and copper mineralization, with many orebodies being defined by a spatial and genetic association with breccias. This field trip will focus on connections between copper mineralization and their host structures. We will examine mineralized and barren breccias from the district, including the world-famous Mt Isa Copper and Ernest Henry IOCG deposits, and the Starra-Selwyn-Swan Cu-Au-Pb-Zn and IOCG deposits. There will also be field visits to exceptionally well exposed breccias from which the connections between deformation, fracturing, fluid release from granites, and mineralization may become evident to the participants. To keep costs down and socializing up, accommodation is mostly in the JCU Roxmere field camp, with one night in Mount Isa. Participants should bring a sleeping bag, a small pillow or something to stuff clothes in to make into a pillow, towel and toiletries. The weather at that time of year is likely to be around 10 to 18ºC minimum (average 15), 27 to 32 ºC maximum (average 29), and dry/fine (almost no chance of rain). Transport will be by 4WD and minibus, from Mt Isa. Potential participants can reduce travel costs by securing a ride in JCU vehicles travelling to and from Mt Isa the days before and after the trip.

Ore Textures and Breccias
Understanding and coping with textural features associated with mineralization is a very important training course, as it covers the vital areas which are only superficially addressed in most undergraduate curricula. It is highly recommended as this underpins almost all aspects of exploration assessments.
2D/3D Mineral Prospectivity & Geological Process Modelling
This course will outline state of the art empirical and process modelling methods in mining and mineral exploration. Case studies concerning targeting of epithermal Au-Ag mineral deposits in the Drummond Basin, and IOCG deposits in the Mount Isa district will be considered to illustrate how risk management can be addressed. Specifically, the workshop will be focussing on multi-scale geostatistical integration of GIS information by means of data-driven methodologies and numerical modeling simulations of ore-genetic processes.
Sediment-Hosted Gold: Carlin & Orogenic Styles
This course involves discussion of recent advances in understanding genesis of, and exploration for, sediment hosted gold-arsenic deposits. Emphasis will be placed on Carlin deposits, Nevada; Sukhoi Log and related deposits, Russia; deposits in the Victorian Goldfields; emphasis on geology and geochemistry of deposits with focus on gold and sulfide paragenesis and LA-ICPMS analysis and mapping of gold & sulfides. Suites of hand specimens of ores and host rocks will be available for discussion.
Porphyry Copper & Epithermal Gold Deposits
The course will cover the characteristic features and origins of, and key exploration criteria for, porphyry copper and epithermal gold deposits. It will involve a series of oral presentations and practical exercises. A significant component of the course will involve hand specimens samples, giving participants the opportunities to familiarize themselves with the diagnostic features of these important classes of magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits. The Nature & Genesis of Uranium Deposits in Australia, Canada & Worldwide: insights from the new & improved Geological Tools/Technology
Since the 2002 International Uranium Workshop in Prague, Czech Republic and the Uranium Geochemistry 2003 Conference in Nancy, France, major advances have taken place in uranium research. These advances have taken place because of new ideas and technologies developed before/during the recent worldwide exploration boom, and have provided researchers and exploration geologists with the ability to quantify genesis models for all types of ore deposits, including uranium. The purpose of this short course is to highlight new applied research that has been developed over the last 10-12 years and integrated successfully into regional to prospect-scale exploration technologies for uranium. The short course will begin with presentations on genetic models for the major types of uranium deposits in Australia, Canada and worldwide, followed by new geological exploration technologies/tools and refined/new strategies for uranium exploration.
Fluids Minerals & Melts: investigating hydrothermal processes using laser ablation-ICPMS techniques
Laser ablation-based micro-analysis is rapidly revolutionizing our understanding of ore deposits by enabling precise trace element and isotopic analyses with high spatial resolution and high sensitivity. LAICPMS trace element and isotopic analyses yield insight into a range of processes relevant to ore deposit formation such as fluid, metal, and magma sources; fluid and magma compositional evolution; fluid-rock reaction pathways; ore and gangue mineral precipitation mechanisms; and metal partitioning among fluids, melts, and minerals. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss applications of and demonstrate the analysis of trace elements and isotopic ratios in fluid inclusions, melt inclusions, and minerals. The workshop will include both lectures and hands on demonstrations. Lectures will detail instrumentation and application of LAICPMS techniques to solving problems relevant to ore deposit genesis. The hands-on portion of the course will demonstrate the operation of a 193 nm eximer laser used in conjunction with both a multi-collector ICPMS instruments for the in situ analysis of S isotopes and a quadrupole ICPMS for the analysis of trace elements in fluid and melt inclusions.
Mapping Mineral Systems with Hyperspectral Sensing.
This one day course is aimed at improving skills in the use of hyperspectral mineral maps using a mineral systems framework and standard GIS tools. Mineral maps are now being delivered through the government geosurveys as part of their precompetitive geoscience suite. The mineral systems approach allows the selection and interpretation of the appropriate mineral abundance and mineral physicochemistries, as well as other pre-competitive data (geophysics, geology, geochemistry), in order to map viable fluid source, pathway/s, depositional sites and outflow zones and is particularly useful for identifying high gradients where metals may have deposited. To facilitate this process, participants are encouraged to bring their laptops armed with a suitable GIS package (e.g. MapInfo or ARCGIS) so that they can load a selection of case history data, including those from the Queensland government’s recent Smart Exploration/Mining Initiatives (www.em.csiro.au/NGMM) for mineral mapping in the Mount Isa and Georgetown areas.
Iron-Oxide Copper Gold-Deposits; geology & discovery
A practical course on IOCG environments, their alteration footprints, and their exploration in exposed and under-cover terrains. This course will bring together a group of international experts to review current understanding of the geology and exploration characteristics of IOCG deposits, with emphases on metallogenesis and examples in the Precambrian cratons of Australia, Canada, Brazil and Sweden. Commonalities among the studied IOCG systems in terms of alteration zoning, breccias, mineralization and geochemical footprints will be highlighted to frame the extraordinary range of IOCG and affiliated deposits into a conceptual evolutionary magnetite-group to hematite-group IOCG±U deposit model. System development at regional to deposit scale and continuum with other deposit types will be illustrated based on stunning field exposures. The potent mineralizing effects of mixing of fluids from different sources in geodynamic environments that can sustain thermal crustal anomalies will be addressed to explain how series of world-class deposits can cluster within a single district. Finally, now that analytical breakthroughs are solving IOCG's fluid sources and reconciling debates over the 'right' metallogenic model, it is time to ponder on the role of magmatism in the genesis of some components of low-Ti magnetite-apatite deposits and the role of geology in increasing effectiveness of exploration for IOCG deposits from under cover to well exposed settings.
Mineral Systems: Concepts to Practical Outcomes
The course will present an overview of the progress made by the pmd*CRC (Predictive Mineral Discovery Cooperative Research Centre) through 2001-2008 on developing mineral systems concepts of metallic deposits and application in minerals exploration. The workshop will bring together a cross—section of the researchers and practitioners of the pmd*CRC to cover cross-scale integration of data in the 5 question framework (geodynamics, architecture, reservoirs, pathways and drivers, transport and deposition processes) and application at deposit, district and terrain scales. The eastern Yilgarn Au province as well as the Isan terrain will be the used to illustrate the mineral systems approach.
